Indigo Dye Workshops
Intro to Indigo Dye 101
2.5 Hour Workshop
Focus on learning the fundamentals of how Indigo Dye is made, materials needed, and demonstrations on how to create surface designs through the ancient Japanese technique of Itajime Shibori, a shaped-resist technique. The cloth is sandwiched between two pieces of wood, which are held in place with clamps, rubber bands or string. This is an ancient Japanese tie dye technique.
Students are encouraged to bring 1-3 items, natural cellulose fibers (cotton, linen, and rayon) to dye/upcycle- light colors work best to show off the indigo blue.
Students will be provided with sample fabric to experiment with.
Stitched Shibori is when the fabric is hand stitched and gathered for resist. These lessons are also available, but are more labor intensive and take more time. Thus less items are dyed, perhaps just 2-3 samples.
What’s Included?
Included info and supplies with all Indigo Classes: clamps, resists, rubber bands, gloves, dye, buckets, drying racks, and other studio supplies, plus a resource list for continuing indigo dyeing beyond the workshop and care instructions.
Indigo Intensive 102
4-6 hour workshop
Each student receives one 5 gallon bucket of Indigo Dye, which can dye around 15 tee shirts or 10 yards of fabric. This class is great for someone who has large projects to work on, like a quilt, or a bunch of clothing, etc. I have also had people take this workshop and taken the bucket home to dye more with friends and family since we will most likely not use up all the dye in 6 hours. This work shop can be done all at once, 6 hours on a weekend can get your 10-15 yards or fabric dyed. Or, split your workshop into two 3 hour workshops over 2 days.
Option 1: Itajime Shibori, a shaped-resist technique. Traditionally, the cloth is sandwiched between two pieces of wood, which are held in place with string/rubber bands. This is an ancient Japanese tie dye technique.
Option 2: Stitched Shibori Sample courses are also available through this 6 hour intensive. Each student will receive a bandana and are welcome to bring items to dye from home as well.
